Jesus said
‘I am a way, a truth and a life. People can come to the Father through me.’
Well, he may have done. But if he did, he wasn’t the Jesus of the New Testament. What Jesus of Nazareth said was
‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ (John 14v6)
Many people today would be happy with the first statement. It fits with the way they think. Religion is nice for other people, and it all leads to the same thing anyway.
The second statement, however, if generally rather less popular. Why is that? What’s the difference? Here are three ideas found only in the second statement that are unpopular today:
1. There is only one way to God. Not all religions can be right, since at least one claims the others are wrong. But Jesus makes the claim that he is the one and only truth.
2. It affects me. If many religions are right, then any given one of them can be ignored. But if one and only one is right, I need to acts accordingly.
3. Part of my life is out of my control. I cannot get to God my own way. I can only come on Jesus’ terms. I can’t choose, and that gives someone else control over me.
