Fool's gold

Not many people would think, at first glance that Fools Gold and Snakes on a plane would have any similarities to them. Yet when I was watching this all I could think, despite no snakes and very few planes was: snakes on a plane!

Fools gold has the same 1 dimensional characters as snakes on a plane, a very predictable story and the unrealistic little sequences (knowing how to fly a plane from Playstation for example).

The film focus’s on divorced treasure hunters Finn (Matthew McConaughey) and Tess (Kate Hudson). Things don’t look good for Finn as Tess is about to leave him, gangsters want him dead and he just sunk his boat. However he’s stumbled across a link to one of histories most valued lost treasures. Suddenly everything looks good. He finds a rich doner; English multi-millionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland, sporting a shocking accent) and his bimbo daughter (Alexis Gabbriel Dziena). They go off looking for treasure only to compete with the gangsters who want Finn dead and Rival treasure hunter Moe (Ray Winstone). There’s a lot of scope here for comedy and action as Fools Gold could have played the rival clans off against each other to much greater effect. Unfortunately there’s lots of talking and emotional bonding throughout which takes up the films run time.

Director Andy Tennant hasn’t totally cocked up though. The film has some good, if not slightly childish gags that keeps it going just enough for you to stay interested. In fact with a bit more thought this could have been billed has a family comedy, if it wasn’t for the Sexual innuendo (including a tit shot, best part of the film!). Plus violence that’s abit more than expected from a rom com.

Snakes on a plane was an enjoyable film. Its ridiculousness was such that you just knew it was meant to be a stereotyped piss take. If it wasn’t then it was just laughably crap! Fool’s gold has a very snakes on a plane feel. Only problem is Tennant seems to want this to have a romantic action comedy feel to it rather than a spoof. He just ended up with bargain basement script writers who have, well have made Fools Gold a film that can’t decide it’s identity.
