COLLEGE LIFE

College life...is rather dull for me. I do enjoy it, however everyday I ask myself more and more why do I bother coming in? Art college starts at 10am, and ends at 5pm. Most of the subjects are design ones; fashion, theatre etc; and so have briefs, deadlines and generally are all panicky about doing work. Fine Art however has no deadline, you just "carry on" with your conceptional ideas and deep thoughts. So...no one turns up. There are about 80 doing Fine art and on Wednesday it reached an all time low of 3, yes 3, people turning up. The tutor came in at 10.10am, sighed, and walked back out again. I sat there...not motivated to do any work in the eerily quiet room, and went home. And then there were 2. I do enjoy it when there's a full room of interesting people all doing interesting art works, with the radio on, with 3 tutors, and with the hum of chatter.

What's even odder is that these people are trying to get into Goldsmiths, St Martins, etc - very good art colleges. Surely they would want to produce some work and maybe be on time and turn up for things in order to get in these places?? I haven't been late or missed a single morning registration unless I've been ill and yet I'm not carrying on with art. One guy called James hasn't had a full day since January. He comes in occasionally to do a crit with everyone (you show your work to a group and discuss) to show his entire 2 weeks worth of work: one photograph. Meh.
