So, I guess it's been a while guys and I've liked to think you've missed me - not just from the Googoo Times. For those of you who don't know, I've just survived my first semester in America, where I have come to be known, rather ironically, as 'the British girl'. Identity crisis or what.

You'd think it's not much different from here but you're, like, totally wrong. America is very very different, like living in a parallel universe where they have no idea what you're saying, but worship you for your accent all the same. So far I've been to a football game, voted and I'm in the process of joining a sorority would you believe it. From my first four months I have enough stories to fill an entire issue, so my next couple of instalments will help you to understand the Americans a little better - to bridge the gap between them and us. Or is that me and you? Or them and me? You and them? Us and me? Argh!

Story from the States

Upon arriving at my writing class, I find a rubber on my chair. I politely ask the guy next to me if the rubber belongs to him. BIG mistake. NEVER ask for a rubber in America, and especially don't ask to borrow one (email me if you need me to explain). Realizing my mistake, I attempt to make amends by complimenting him on his jumper. It turns out a 'jumper' is a dress. Bloody hell. What am I now, Bilingual Baby?!

Lost in Translation

Fit = Cute/Hot (depends on pronunciation as in 'fit' or 'ffffit')

Wicked = Awesome (but in Boston they say wicked-awesome, which is also confusing)

Football = Soccer, where Rugby = Football, but they have rugby so Rugby = Rugby
