I like James Cameron films; Aliens, Terminator 1&2 and the Abyss were all favourites of mine when I was younger. So when I heard he was behind a new 3D movie that was going to break all the rules I knew this was going to be the most realistic 3D experience ever. Or was it?

No! Avatar’s 3D, but doesn’t make me feel like I’m a part of the film, like the 3D effects in the Polar Express. Bits of plant do stick out of the screen, but it’s basic stuff. At no point did I duck when weird mysterious animals charged at the screen or when explosions and debris headed my way.

Avatar is about humans invading another planet (Pandora) and bleeding it dry of its natural resources. Crippled ex-marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is given the job of going undercover as one of the planet’s native people the Na’vi. His mission is to either get them to move or, if that fails, find out their weaknesses. He ends up getting close to warrior girl Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). I think you know where this is going. But, however basic it is, Avatar is enthralling.

The story has been sweetened with a pinch of imagination. Pandora is very colourful and the animals are incredible. Everything on screen wants to eat everything else. Whenever the characters are in the jungle, you can’t help but feel tense as everything around poses a threat! Pandora is a place of fairytales, if fairytales were evil.

Although the characters’ background is barely touched upon, their relationships are built up throughout the 163 minute runtime. Cameron doesn’t dwell on too many chatty scenes but instead does it Match Of The Day style, including only the most important bits, so we can get a feel of where the characters are going.

The final fight scenes might not use the 3D effects that well, but they’re incredible none the less. The last third of the film is a true battle movie to rival anything that’s been before it.

Avatar is comprised of things we’ve seen before, put together in a way we’ve never seen before, and it works really well. Save yourself some cash though and see it in 2D.
