One of the big events in the annual fashion calendar must be the winter sales. They’re bigger and better than the summer sales, and tempt our money away even though we are into our overdrafts after the extensive Christmas shopping. And it can be a wonderful thing. All the goodies that I can buy and all at half the price! Which means I can buy double the number of goodies.. Just because an item has a sale tag attached, my brain immediately validates it an “unmissable opportunity” and threatens me with the horrifying possibility that some other fashion whore will spot it and snap it up if I think about it too long.
This year, I decided to become a cautious, non-spontaneous buyer of the sales and spend my money wisely on items that will carry me nicely into spring and even longer ie. style before fashion. (for those of you interested, the spring trends are bright patent colours and florals) With this in mind I headed into Kingston on the 27th of December for some serious hunting. normally i head out much later to avoid the crowds but i couldn't resist. I have to be careful here not to turn this into a rant about the chavs in Kingston, but yes, there were lots of them. At least I wouldn’t have to fight with them over large gold hoops in Claire’s. But it wasn’t just them! the new breed of emo kids with ironic ninja turtle backpacks and boys in impossibly skinny black jeans were also about, trying to nab a bargain. I had never seen the place so full of people and felt exhausted just trying to hike my way into the nearest shop. But the joyous bright red SALE signs were plastered in every window (Even Primark! That would be reduction from 2 to zero pounds then) and I concentrated on my mission.
And what a mission it was. Some people say that only the rubbish stuff is on sale and it’s just too much hassle and they’re probably right. I don’t know how many people I killed with my jabbing elbows but I was quite pleased with my finds, which included a rather sexy top for 8 pounds (last one of the rails) and a black cardigan from whistles for 25 that was reduced from 80, which is the kinda thing that doesn't go out of fashion. Mission accomplished. The next day, I trekked it into central London, but that’s another story..happy sale shopping googoo readers! but don't get in my way..
